When an employee is harassed while he/she does his/her job or is on his/her way to and from work is known as workplace harassment. The harasser has to be someone from the workplace. The harasser can be anyone such as a boss, co-worker, manager, customer, or anyone the person is acquainted with, because of the work. Harassments can occur anywhere in the workplace. It can be in the restroom, washroom, or lunchroom.
Harassment can even be faced outside the workplace and yet be called workplace harassment. It can be either in a party, a business trip, or even during a meeting at someone's house. This is only when the harasser has power over the victim at the workplace such as the boss or someone holding high position in office
When the person is a co-worker and harasses you at the workplace, this becomes workplace harassment. In these cases, the employer is always responsible for any action that affects employees. He is responsible for any harassment that might affect work or the workplace. If the victim does not report to the authority, there can always be other people who can take action.
To work in an environment free of harassment is the right of every employee. Hence, employers are responsible and should provide security at the workplace. Harassment at work should be taken seriously as any harassment at the workplace is illegal. This can ruin the performance of the harassed employee. It is also not fair on the part of the employer to expect the best of an employee, when that employee is faced with such a situation, as this affects the victim both physically and psychologically.
Harassment at the workplace makes it very difficult for the affected employee to work efficiently. So, if a person is harassed he/she can ask for help from the union, the employer, or from an outside agency. If a person makes gestures that make another person uncomfortable, the affected employee should bring it to the notice of someone else, even if that someone is not willing to take any action against the harasser.
However, all unpleasant situations at the workplace should not be mistaken as workplace harassment. Being a bad boss and making the work environment a bad one does not make the behavior of the boss against the law. In this case, legal action is not always required, as there are other ways to deal with problems that are not illegal. So, a person should seek help to deal with all sorts of harassment problems and not only workplace harassment.
Workplace harassment can be identified by understanding the relation between the two parties. The person should be comfortable with a certain remark made by the other party and it should also be acceptable to the person, else it becomes a case of harassment.
Most of the harassment at the workplace is either sexual or racial discrimination. Often while a harassed employee fights a workplace harassment case, it becomes hard for that employee, if he/she does not have any supporters. In this case, legal help is the only option.
